The inaugural Commonwealth Schools Chess Championship officially kicked off in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, bringing together young chess talents from across the Commonwealth for what promises to be a historic celebration of youth and schools chess.

The championship has attracted participation from 13 member federations, with an impressive 518 players competing across three dynamic time formats — Rapid, Standard, and Blitz Chess.

Running from 4th to 12th October 2026, the championship provides a vital global platform for young athletes to hone their skills, earn international FIDE experience, and build lasting friendships across the Commonwealth family.

Africa is proudly represented by two continental federations — Namibia and Chess Kenya. Namibia travelled with a disciplined delegation of 9 participants, while Kenya mounted a massive delegation of 96 participants, making it one of the largest contingents in the entire championship.

This strong showing is a commendable testament to the growing continental investment in grassroots youth chess and the dedication of African federations to exposing emerging talent to high-level global competition.

The championship holds added significance for the African Chess Confederation following the recent election of ACC President Benard Wanjala as an Executive Director of the Commonwealth Chess Association, paving the way for closer bilateral cooperation and creating future possibilities of hosting Commonwealth chess events on African soil.

The opening ceremony was graced by prominent international leaders including Commonwealth Chess Association President Bharat Singh Chauhan, the Secretary General of the Association, the President of the Malaysian Chess Federation, and the President of the All India Chess Federation.

Africa is present, Africa is competing, and Africa is proudly making its mark on the international stage.
