The inaugural Commonwealth Schools Chess Championship 2026, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, saw African players make their mark, with Kenya leading the continent’s medal charge and Namibia contributing to Africa’s growing presence on the international school chess stage.

Kenya: Africa’s Medals

Kenya emerged as the standout African nation, securing individual and team honours across the Standard and Blitz sections.

In the Standard Championship Open U19 section, Rishit Ravat was crowned Champion with 3½ points, securing a historic individual gold medal for Kenya.

In the Open U11 section, Manyeki Nathaniel earned 3rd place with 6½ points, securing an individual bronze medal in a fiercely competitive field.

In team competitions, Kenya's Open U17 squad claimed the Commonwealth team championship title with 8 points. The Girls U11 team finished as runners-up with 12½ points to take silver, while the Girls U15 team secured another silver medal with 11 points.

In the Blitz Championship, WFM Nashipae Bella finished second in the Girls U15 section with 5 points, adding an individual silver medal to Kenya’s outstanding achievements.

Kenya’s strong showing reflects the depth of its school chess programme, with a sizeable contingent competing across multiple age categories and delivering impressive results.

Namibia: Building International Experience!

Namibia also participated in the championship, fielding a contingent of approximately nine players across several age categories.

Although the Namibian team finished without podium places, several players recorded respectable results in competitive fields featuring participants from India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore and Kenya.

Among the notable performances were Muronga Alicia Renate, who scored 4½ points to finish 15th in the Girls U13 category, and Shikongo Toini Tuyakula Lesheni, who secured 3½ points to place 12th in the Girls U11 category.

Other Namibian players also gained valuable experience competing against international opposition, an important step in their continued development.

Africa’s Chess Journey Continues!

Kenya’s medal haul provided a major highlight for Africa at the inaugural championship, while Namibia’s participation further strengthened the continent’s representation at the event.

Beyond the medals and final standings, the championship offered young African players an opportunity to test their skills internationally, learn from stronger opposition and build experience for future competitions.

Next Stop: Mauritius!

The journey continues as the Commonwealth Schools Chess Championship heads to Mauritius for its next edition. With the inaugural championship now concluded, African players will have another opportunity to showcase their talent, compete for honours and raise the continent’s profile on the international chess stage.

“Africa is growing. Africa is competing. Africa is making its moves!”
